UCBH Gets Approvals for China Bank Deal
UCBH Holdings Inc., the holding company for United Commercial Bank, said Monday it received regulatory approval for its planned $205 million cash purchase of Shanghai-based Business Development Bank Ltd., clearing the way for the deal to close in December. The move will expand the California banking chain's reach into mainland China. The purchase was first announced in May. United Commercial offers financial products and services to small- and medium-sized companies. The bank has branches in California, New York, New England, Atlanta, Houston, the Pacific Northwest and Hong Kong. .
Encourage empowerment of women in cooperatives: Patil
New Delhi, Nov 26 : President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today urged the urban banking sector to give more representation to women on the board of various urban cooperative banks for the empowerment of women and also to encourage formation of more women cooperative banks for betterment of women in the country. Inaugurating the 9th All India Conference of Cooperative Urban Banks and Credit Societies organised by NAFCUB, Ms Patil said that the urban cooperative credit movement in India caters to the needs of credit requirement of people with limited means in urban and semi-urban areas and seeks financial inclusion of people who are economically disadvantaged. This movement is one of the largest movements in the world having more than 20 million members in its fold with 1850 urban banks and 40,000 credit societies, she added.
Justice Seeks Delay in Court Challenge to Immigration Plan
The Bush administration said Friday that it will modify its planned crackdown on U.S. companies that employ illegal immigrants, asking a federal judge to delay hearing a lawsuit brought by major American labor, business and farm organizations until the new strategy is completed. In papers filed in San Francisco late Friday afternoon, Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey S. Bucholtz told U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer that the Homeland Security Department is making unspecified changes to its plan to pressure employers to fire as many as 8.7 million workers with suspect Social Security numbers. .

Teens have entrepreneurial spirit
Despite the stereotype of teenagers as generally unmotivated, one survey indicates that many still have the entrepreneurial spirit. Two-thirds of teenage respondents said they would like to start their own business someday, according to the JA Interprise Poll. JA Worldwide, or Junior Achievement, is an organization that provides entrepreneurship, work-readiness and financial-literacy education to students. Students in the 2007 poll were about evenly split when it came to deciding which option would provide the most job security: 37.2 percent said "working for a company" while 35.9 percent said "owning your own business." The survey was administered through JA Worldwide's Web site from March 22 to May 7. .
