| Summit targets small-business owners
A free informational session on business financing for small-businesses owners will be held in Honolulu Dec. 5. Hawaii-based mortgage banking company Meridian Financial Network is sponsoring its first Small Business Summit, which it plans to hold annually. The company, a U.S. Small Business Administration-approved lending institution, said the half-day session will help familiarize small-business owners with both in-house and government loan programs, including SBA loan programs. The SBA offers loan programs to help small businesses obtain financing when they might not be eligible for conventional bank loans because of a lack of financial history. Speakers at the session will include Andrew Poepoe, director of the SBA's Hawaii District office; Jim Tollefson, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii; and Keith Ogata, director of S.C.O.R.E.

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - HSBC PLC is understood to be considering a sale of its French retail business as part of the bank's new plans to derive 60 pct of its earnings from emerging markets, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The newspaper did not name its source, but said the personal financial services and small business banking operations in France, estimated to be worth about 2 bln stg, are thought to be on the block. Analysts believe that HSBC's businesses in Malta, Canada, Australia and Bermuda and its regional banking operations in the US could also be put up for sale. The moves comes amid pressure from Knight Vinke, the activist investor that has accused HSBC of a lack of focus and criticised its pay structure. The newspaper said it is understood that the review of underperforming businesses was launched early this year, before Knight Vinke launched its high-profile campaign.
Despite filters, tidal wave of spam bears down on e-mailers
Unwanted commercial e-mail touting Viagra, get-rich-quick schemes and more is growing by electronic leaps and bounds: an Internet-buckling 60 billion to 150 billion messages a day. "It was one of the rare times (Gates) was wrong," says David Mayer, a product manager at e-mail security firm IronPort Systems, a Cisco Systems (CSCO) division. The sheer volume of unwanted commercial e-mail is like a tidal wave, washing over the best-built digital dams and, despite a federal anti-spam law, resulting in spam leaking through to consumers. Feeding the spam-alanche are advances in spamming techniques, the rise of bots - millions of compromised PCs that spew spam - and the fact that more people have multiple e-mail addresses. Market researcher The Radicati Group estimates there will be 2.4 billion e-mail accounts worldwide by year's end.
