Holiday Hiring Declines Nationally
The busy holiday shopping season adds hundreds of thousands of temporary jobs each year. Nationally, retailers hired 596,000 seasonal employees last year. Frear's Garden Center Inc., in Greece added 30 employees alone. While Frear's General Manager, Jay Nicholson, said seasonal hiring was about the same this year at the independently owned store, the nation's biggest retailer cut the number of seasonal workers it hired in half. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said it planned to employ 20,000 to 25,000 seasonal workers nationally. National retailers are concerned high gas prices, credit worries and a housing slump will cut into holiday spending and they're bottom line. "It's always a concern," said Nicholson, “But when it comes down to it, we really want to celebrate at the times of year that are important to us.
Uma Bharti attacks Reliance Fresh store in Bhopal
Bhopal, Nov 23 (ANI): Bharatiya Janshakti Party Chief Uma Bharati led a protest rally here that attacked a Reliance Fresh shop in protest against the entry of multinational and corporate retail chains in the country. Uma said such entities would wipe away the livelihoods of millions of small retailers and allied businesses. "Do you know one person of this family has gifted his wife a jet costing 300 crore. If he had bought it with the money earned through noble work or hard work, we would have been proud of him, but if he does it by crushing the livelihood of small retailers, it is very shameful," Bharti said. The opening up of the fragmented retail industry, which is dominated by family-run shops, has triggered opposition from some political parties and retail traders, who fear massive job losses.
