NZ PM congratulates Rudd on landslide

NEW Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has said she looks forward to working with the new Labor government in Australia.

Speaking from Uganda, where she is at a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Ms Clark congratulated Labor leader Kevin Rudd on his landslide win. She said she looked forward to working closely with his government. "I anticipate that our close and familiar relationship will continue to flourish under Mr Rudd and his new Labor government," Ms Clark said. "Our many areas of co-operation with Australia include developing a single economic market, climate change, strengthening institutions in the South Pacific, improving international trade rules, and making the world a safer place through peacekeeping and promoting inter-faith dialogue," she said. She also paid tribute to outgoing prime minister John Howard.

Business to accept donations for U.S. troops

ANGLETON Inspired by the sacrifice of troops fighting overseas, a local business owner is trying to make it as easy as possible for the public to donate items for them.

Friday, Diversified Plant Services will be a one-stop drop-off location for a wide range of items to be sent to troops. The company will set up a tent to make a drive-through location, giving those who wish to donate a step-free avenue for doing so.

L.G. Butch Murrell, owner of Diversified Plant Services on Highway 288-B near CR 220 in Angleton, conferred with staff members and decided his company would support U.S. troops this holiday season. Diversified Plant Services finds causes each year, from underprivileged families to church groups, and will direct its energy this year to Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County.

From banking to back care

For 13 years, Wayne Shum helped small business owners finance their dreams.

This summer, he turned his attention to his own dream, joining his wife and her longtime business partner in a venture they believe is on the cutting edge of back pain treatment.

Shum, 38, was a district manager looking after small business service with TD Canada Trust. He spent his days on the road, checking with branches and customers from London to Cambridge, Brantford to Stratford.

"I really enjoyed my job, but this was a great opportunity."

The opportunity was something his wife, Sandra Lee, had been dabbling in for a few months. She is a chiropractor, in practice with fellow chiropractor Doug Pooley in St. Thomas and Dutton.

"There's a big gap between what we consider conservative care for chronic back pain and surgery," says Lee, 38.
