New American Express Survey Reveals Business Gifting Trends This Holiday Season: Survey Shows Gift Cards Top ...

Businesses will be giving employees gift cards more than any other category of gift this year, according the new American Express Business Gifting survey. The study, which surveyed both companies and employees, reveals how businesses plan to say "thank you" to employees and clients and celebrate this holiday season, and what employees expect and want for their year-end treats.

People to People: Small business owner matching customers' donations

Over at United Check Cashing on Route 211, owner Keld Alstrup hears first-hand about how hard it can be to make ends meet around here. Many of his customers are hard-working blue-color folks, and their finances can be fragile. An unexpected car repair, a medical bill or a home repair can devastate a family budget.

So last year, after reading a story about the People for People Fund in the Times Herald-Record, he got an idea.

"Our customers are very generous," Alstrup said. "We can relate to the people who get help from People for People, so why not do something to help?"

First, Alstrup and his business partner David Freer Jr. looked into the fund a bit, and they liked what they found.

"The money goes directly where it should," Alstrup said of the fund, which helps local families and individuals through an unexpected money crisis.

Fast move on money launderers

THE Rudd Government is expected to speed up action against money launderers, especially those operating within the "blue-rinse set": private financiers, small cash-handling businesses and legal professionals.

Labor has for years lambasted the Coalition over its tardiness in delivering anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) laws, with Labor legal affairs spokesman Joe Ludwig criticising the eventual legislation as "half-baked".

It's understood Labor is keen to bring the second level of possible money launderers, (including real estate agents, jewellers, lawyers and accountants) into the mandatory suspicious transactions reporting net as soon as possible.

Submissions on the Coalition's proposed second tranche have been considered by the Attorney-General's Department, but any decisions will "be a matter for the incoming Government", a department spokesman said.

Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College helps lawyers get in touch with themselves

BOSTON, Mass. — A male lawyer sits across from a woman he does not know while she plays the role of his wife. He apologizes for the condescending tone he used in their last argument, and says: “I treasure you, and can't imagine living without you."

As he reaches for a tissue, his eyes brimming with tears, a dozen lawyers sitting in a circle around him applaud.

Role-playing exercises like this are standard fare at the Trial Lawyers College, a mecca for litigators searching for ways to shed their lawyerly facades and embrace their own pain so they can better represent their clients.

Founded 13 years ago by famed Wyoming trial lawyer Gerry Spence, the Trial Lawyers College uses psychodrama — a form of group therapy in which participants recreate scenes from their lives — to help lawyers get in touch with themselves, and win big verdicts while they're at it.
