SBA Deadline to Apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans is December 26, 2007

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding businesses in Broward, Collier, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties in the State of Florida that Economic Injury Disaster Loans are still available to small businesses economically impacted by the fire November 19, 2006 at the strip mall located at 1890 SW 8th Street, Miami, Florida.

"Small businesses that suffered economic losses as a result of the disaster and want to apply for low-interest loans from the SBA are urged to do so before the December 26 deadline," said Frank Skaggs, Director of SBA Field Operations Center East.

Small businesses may apply for loans up to $l.5 million if they suffered substantial economic injury from the disaster. These working capital loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred.

Local lender receives small business award

The U.S. Small Business Administration Thursday recognized the top lenders in the state for providing SBA-backed start-up and expansion loans to small businesses, as well as the government agencies that signed the most contracts with minority firms."These lenders help provide economic opportunities for those looking to go into business," said Michelle Johnston, the state SBA director.Glacier Bancorp, headquartered in Kalispell and the holding company for Valley Bank of Helena among other community banks around the state, was the top SBA lender in the year ended Sept. 30, making 76 loans totaling nearly $6.6 million. Vice President Don Chery said the company's practice of leaving the banks it acquires as stand-alone institutions helps generate SBA activity."When you own small community banks and leave them as small community banks, they have a tendency to be more community oriented," he said.

Free workshop planned for small-business owners

A free, informal workshop for small-business owners wanting to learn how to obtain government contracts will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 30 in Carson City.

The state Procurement Outreach Program, part of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, will hold the workshop at NCED headquarters, 108 E. Proctor St., just north of the Capitol.

Kathy Agee, deputy director of POP, said the Carson City School District will have a presentation, and other agencies participating include the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Nevada Small Business Development Center and the Rural Nevada Development Corporation.

Small Business Loans OK'd for Farmers

The U.S. Small Business Administration said Friday that federal disaster loans will be made available to some farmers in four northern Indiana counties whose crops were damaged by a series of cold snaps last spring.

Farmers in Elkhart, LaPorte, St. Joseph and Steuben counties can apply for the low-interest loans if they sustained losses from several frosts and freezes that occurred between April 4 and June 13, the SBA said in a news release.

The counties are adjacent to counties in Michigan where spring frosts and freezes devastated young buds on grape vines, said Frank Skaggs, director of the SBA Field Operations Center East.

"These counties are eligible because they are contiguous to one or more primary counties in the State of Michigan. The Small Business Administration recognizes that disasters do not usually stop at the county or state lines," Skaggs said in the release.
