It's good for home-based business to give as well as receive

Sometimes the best businesses are ones that give it away - to charity, that is. If you make charitable giving a priority, you may find it can benefit your reputation, your soul and, ultimately, your bottom line.

Goodwill giving is good for business. Donating to charity - either your money or your time - on behalf of your home-based business can improve your financial performance, enhance brand image and reputation, increase sales and customer loyalty, and improve your ability to attract and retain employees.

Here are 10 smart ways to make charitable giving a priority in your home-based business:

-- Set a budget. U.S. citizens contribute an average of 2.5 percent of their personal income to charitable causes. Some businesses with giving programs set aside up to 5 percent of their pretax income for contributions.

Labor makes headlines worldwide

WORD of Labor's victory in the federal election has made headlines worldwide, with many international news agencies describing it as an "end to a conservative era".

The New York Times headlined a story about the election with "Australian Victory Ends a Conservative Era" on its website soon after John Howard gave his concession speech. Global broadcaster CNN posted the news online under the headline "Australia votes for change" – which was posted as the top story on its website. The BBC also featured it as its top story its international news. In the UK, the Daily Mail went with the headline "Australian Prime Minister John Howard loses government AND seat in parliament in Labor landslide" on its website. Other newspapers in the UK, including The Sun, The Times and The Guardian also ran stories on the landslide.

Economy makes tax planning harder

NEW YORK: Many small-business owners meeting with their accountants this month and next might find that year-end tax planning and projections for 2008 are a little more complicated than usual because of the uneasy economy.

''We're finding a lot of clients due to the economy aren't doing as well as they've done in previous years,'' said Jeffrey Berdahl, a certified public accountant with Berdahl & Co. in Center Valley, Pa. ''We're not seeing as much of top-line revenue growth.''

For many business owners, that means cash flow isn't as healthy as they'd like. And so decisions typically made toward the end of the year — for example, whether to buy new equipment or whether to set up a retirement plan — need to be thought through even more carefully.

As always, what businesses do for the balance of the old year needs to be considered in the context of projections for 2008.
