Holiday Exhibit Displays Folk Art

There seems to be a trend toward giving homemade gifts this holiday season. More and more people like to make gifts themselves.

The Rochester Folk Art Guild caters to those who like handmade crafts, be it pottery, furniture, even toys.

The art of these crafts is perfected at the guild's 47th Holiday Exhibit

“It really is a celebration for us too to see how everything, how, that everybody's been working on to share with the public; to look into detail at what we've been doing and how it turned out and to enjoy," said David Barnet, Rochester Folk Art Guild.

Examples of the artisans' creativity and ingenuity are found in museums and private collections all over the world. The Holiday Exhibit continues Sunday, November 25 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Harley School.

Editor's note

In my neighborhood, near Sunrise Mountain, it seems there's a watering hole around every corner. Along a stretch of East Charleston past Nellis there's a Putter's, an Inn Zone, a place called Casa Blanca, a Loose Caboose and other bars. Mere blocks away is a PT's, a Village Pub, a Buck's, a Big Dog's and a Dylan's. All have gaming and all are virtually minutes apart from one another. Taking into account the convenience stores and groceries, that's a lot of gaming in one small area, even as Boulder Station and Sam's Town loom in the distance. This sort of commercial mix is the norm in a lot of places in town. Most of these gaming taverns live and die by their video poker machines. The drinks and food might as well be free. But dusk is breaking for these once-booming establishments. Not only has the smoking ban taken a toll, but the local economy has soured, drying up many patrons' disposable income.

Why is Dick Cheney smiling?

You might imagine that Dick Cheney, a well-known worrier, would be thinking dark thoughts about the economy.

Home-loan foreclosures are on the rise, banks are writing off billions, the dollar has become the butt of jokes, and bearish economists are invoking the "R" word. But that's not what has the Vice President worried.

In fact, when he looks at the subprime mortgage catastrophe that's at the root of most of the economy's troubles, he's more concerned about Washington's impulse to fix it - a view that sets him slightly apart from his Treasury Secretary and firmly at odds with well-meaning Democrats on Capitol Hill.

No, if there's anything about the economy that keeps Dick Cheney up at night, it's the prospect of sabotage aimed at disrupting the oil market, he told FORTUNE.
